Learn calligraphy in Leicestershire at Bawdon Lodge Farm.9.30am to 11.30am on 25th July 2026 Join Jane Lappage on this ‘Have a go Modern Calligraphy workshop’. Priced at £35 per person. Your ticket includes everything for the workshop. Drinks and cakes are not included in the workshop fee but are available to purchase at the coffee shop counter on the day. All equipment provided for you to be able to learn how to hold & use the pen, nib and work with metallic paints. Have a practise with hand out example sheets and then use your new found skills to create a personalised wreath sample that you can take home! Jane has taught all types of calligraphy & describes “Modern Calligraphy” as being wonderful and “user friendly” compared to the classic scripts and is perfect for both left and right handed people so no excuses lefties!!!! Part of the Oxford Summer School 2026 Starts Thursday 6th August 2026 for two daysCost: £140 for the two day course Course Description: Copperplate is beautifully elegant script and is suitable for all abilities including both left and right handed people. Over the course of two days you will learn how to use a fine point nib and practice the strokes required to construct the alphabet and particularly the letters you choose to make a floral card. Practice is key, and you can experiment with both sparkly paints and traditional inks that give impressive results even on practice work. Following this initial instruction, you will have the option to either learn freehand floral illustration techniques or work with a prepared template. Both approaches will result in the development of new skills and a beautifully crafted card which can be fine tuned to any occasion such as birthdays, anniversaries or weddings. Suitable For: This course is suitable for beginners or improvers alike. Part of the Oxford Summer School 2026 Saturday 8th August 2026 – Cost: £70 Course Description: Modern calligraphy is described as wonderful and ‘user friendly’ compared to classic scripts and it is perfect for both left and right handed people. Jane’s new approach to this script is to work with shiny paints that look amazing on dark or black card. She will begin with the basics, teaching you to hold the fine point nib correctly in order to generate the right strokes. You will then work the letters and connecting strokes. After practicing this Jane will then show you how to design and layout a card and you will take away a beautifully blended finished piece. Suitable For: This course is suitable for beginners or improvers alike. Requirements List: If you have calligraphy items please bring them and Jane will see if they are suitable for this class or advise their best use. Materials Cost: There will be a charge of £5 to cover the cost of all materials. This is payable directly to the tutor. Other products will be available to purchase.

Learn to gold-leaf in Nottinghamshire at Strelley Hall in Created By Hand’s wonderful workshops. 1 Day Workshop (10:00am – 4:00pm) £65.00 to include all materials ‘Illuminated’ manuscript is the name given to text which contains gold or silver which reflects the light. A manuscript which is richly decorated in colour only, without having gold or silver is, technically, not illuminated. Illumination with gold goes back into antiquity but is especially common in the later Middle Ages in manuscripts such as Books of Hours. These days, gold leaf continues to be used to create either that classic illuminated look or a clean modern simplistic letter in an ornate frame can look just as on trend. This one day course gives you a quick insight on how to apply and achieve a great gold leafed initial. You will see how striking the gold makes any type of work, be it a large piece or just small highlights. This effect cannot be achieved by gold paint no matter how metallic it is. Modern calligraphy is a new way of learning calligraphy, perfect for both right and left-handers. Jane will teach you all the basics in this half day session – if you want to upgrade to a full day, just let us know. All equipment will be provided and you will get to keep the handouts and practice sheets. There is the opportunity to purchase pens and inks if you wish. If you already have equipment, please bring it along and Jane can advise if it’s right for your Modern Calligraphy journey. What’s included:Nib, nib holder, handouts and practice sheets.
